Ἀλλ᾽ ἡμεῖς οὐκ ἐλεοῦμεν ἑαυτοὺς, ἀλλ᾽ ἐπενοήσαμεν,[75] καθάπερ ἐχθροὶ ὄντες ἑαυτῶν, τῆς φυσικῆς[76] ἀνάγκης καὶ ἀναπαύσεως[77] μείζονα τυραννίδα,[78] τὴν ἀπὸ τοῦ πλούτου ἀγρυπνίαν.[79] Μέριμνα[80] γὰρ, φησὶ, πλοῦτου, ἀφιστᾷ[81] ὕπνον. Καὶ ὅρα πόση τοῦ θεοῦ ἡ κηδεμονία·[82] Οὐκ ἐπέτρεψε[83] τῇ προθέσει[84] τὴν ἀνάπαυσιν, οὐδὲ προαιρέσει[85] τινὶ τὴν χρείαν τοῦ ὕπνου, ἀλλὰ φυσικαῖς αὐτὴν ἀνάγκαις κατέδησεν,[86] ἵνα καὶ ἄκοντες[87] εὐεργετώμεθα·[88] τὸ γὰρ καθεύδειν,[89] τῆς φύσεως.[90] Ἡμεῖς δὲ ὡς σφόδρα ἑαυτοὺς μισοῦντες, ὡς ἑτέρους πολεμοῦντες[91] καὶ θλίβοντες,[92] τῆς φυσικῆς ταύτης ἀνάγκης μείζονα τὴν ἀπὸ τῶν χρημάτων[93] ἐπενοήσανμεν τυραννίδα. Ἡμέρα γέγονε; καὶ δέδοικεν[94] ὁ τοιοῦτος τοὺς συκοφάντας.[95] Ἡ νὺξ κατέλαβε; τρέμει[96] λῃστάς.[97] Θάνατος ἐπέστη; τοῦ θανάτου μᾶλλον δάκνεται,[98] ὅτι ἑτέρων ἐκεῖνα γίνεται. Παιδίον ἔσχε; πλείων ἡ ἐπιθυμία· καὶ τότε δοκεῖ πένης εἶναι. Οὐκ ἔσχε, μᾶλλον ὀδυναται.[99] Τοῦτον οὖν μακαρίζεις[100] τὸν οὐδαμόθεν[101] ἠσθῆναι[102] δυνάμενον; τούτῳ φθονεῖς τῷ κλυδωνιζομένῳ,[103] ἐν λιμένι[104] γαληνῷ[105] τῇ πενίᾳ ἐστηκώς; Ὄντως καὶ τοῦτο ἐλάττωμα τῆς ἀνθρωπίνης φύσεως, τὸ μὴ φέρειν τὰ ἀγαθὰ γενναίως,[106] ἀλλ᾽ εἰς τὰς εὐπραγίας[107] ἐξυβρίζειν.[108] Καὶ ταῦτα μὲν ἐνταῦθα· ὅταν δὲ ἀπέλθωμεν ἐκεῖ, ἄκουσον τί φησιν ὁ πλούσιος, ὁ μυρίων ἀγαθῶν κύριος, ὥσπερ σὺ λέγεις· οὐ γὰρ ἂν ἔγωγε ταῦτα εἴποιμι ἀγαθὰ, ἀλλ᾽ ἀδιάφορα,[109] Οὕτος τοίνυν ὁ μυρίων ἀγαθῶν κύριος, ἄκουσον τί φησι, καὶ τίνος ἐν χρείᾳ καθέστηκε· Πάτερ, φησὶν, Ἀβραὰμ, πέμψον Λάζαρον, ἵνα ἄκρῳ[110] τῷ δακτύλῳ[111] ἐπιστάζῃ μου τὴν γλῶτταν, ὅτι ἀποτηγανίζομαι.[112] Εἰ γὰρ ἐν ἀδείᾳ[113] καὶ φροντίδος[114] χωρὶς τὸν ἄπαντα βίον διήγαγε·[115] τί λέγω τὸν ἄπαντα βίον; τὴν μίαν ῥοπὴν[116] ἐκείνην· ῥοπὴ γὰρ ἐστιν· ὡς μία γὰρ ῥοπὴ, φησὶν, ὁ πᾶς ἡμῶν αἰὼν πρὸς τὸν ἄπειρον·[117] εἰ τοίνυν πάντα αὐτῷ κατὰ γνώμην[118] προεκεχωρήκει,[119] ἆρα οὐκ ἐλεεινός ἐστι τούτων τῶν ῥημάτων, μᾶλλον δὲ τούτων τῶν πραγμάτων; Οὐχὶ οἴνῳ περιεκλύζετό[120] σου ἡ τράπεζα;[121] νῦν δὲ οὐδὲ σταγόνος[122] ὕδατος εἶ κύριος, καὶ ταῦτα ἐν χρείᾳ πολλῇ καθεστηκώς. Οὐχ ἡλκωμένον[123] ὑπερεώρας[124] τὸν πένητα; νῦν δὲ ἀξιοῖς αὐτὸν ἐδεῖν, καὶ οὐδεὶς δίδωσι.
